What driver monitoring means

Driver monitoring is the use of in-cab cameras and AI to detect signs of driver fatigue, distraction, or risky driving behaviour in real time. Where a forward-facing camera watches the road, driver monitoring specifically watches the person behind the wheel, tracking indicators such as eye closure duration, head position, and gaze direction to flag early signs of drowsiness or distraction before they become an incident.

The technology sits within the broader category of video telematics, but it is worth treating as its own term because the detection logic, and the compliance case for using it, is specific to driver state rather than driving events like harsh braking or lane drift.

Driver monitoring is not the same as driver behaviour scoring based on telematics events alone (harsh braking, speeding, rapid acceleration). Behaviour scoring infers risk from how the vehicle was driven. Driver monitoring observes the driver directly, using a camera aimed at the cab rather than the road.

How driver monitoring works

A driver-facing camera, usually mounted near the rear-view mirror or on the dashboard, uses computer vision to track facial and head-position indicators continuously while the vehicle is moving. The system is trained to recognise patterns associated with fatigue, extended eye closure, slow blink rate, or nodding head position, and distraction, looking away from the road for an extended period, or phone use detected in frame.

When the system detects one of these patterns, it can respond in two ways depending on configuration: an immediate in-cab alert, an audible warning or vibration intended to interrupt the fatigue or distraction event as it happens, and a logged event sent to the fleet management platform for review, tied to the vehicle's location and time at that moment.

Processing typically happens on the device itself (edge AI), so alerts can trigger instantly without waiting on a data connection, with the event data uploading to the platform once connectivity allows.

Why driver monitoring matters for Australian operators

Fatigue management is not optional for operators covered by the Heavy Vehicle National Law. It is a specific duty under Chain of Responsibility, sitting alongside the vehicle-maintenance and route-compliance duties that already apply. Getting it wrong carries real penalties: corporate CoR breaches can attract fines up to $4.23 million, and individual breaches up to $436,850, under the NHVR penalty framework.

Driver monitoring gives operators a real-time layer of evidence for that duty, rather than relying solely on rostering and rest-break records after the fact.
